By Nadine Millar • April 3, 2013. Originally written as a novella by Atwood and then adapted for the stage The verbal digs between her and her cousin, Helen of Troy, brought a human face to both these two heroines of mythology. It's their second run–last year's run sold out. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus (Myths, The) I am almost reluctant to write this review of Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus --for two main reasons. While the story is touted as a retelling of The Odyssey from Penelope's point of view, I find it to be so After all, The Odyssey follows Odysseus who is nowhere near Penelope (geographically speaking), so The Penelopiad adds to the story rather than retells it. A Bit of a Ramble The Penelopiad is the first of the Canongate Myths, a series of myths, fables, and folktales rewritten with a spin by contemporary authors. The Penelopiad is an exquisitely narrated re-imagining of Homer's Odyssey, from the perspective of Penelope, faithful wife of Odysseus, who waited twenty years for him to return from fighting the Trojan War. The Penelopiad (Canongate Myths) The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood where the suitors start bossing her around, and ask the kids what they think *I* would do if my husband tried to tell me what to do…. The play, scripted by Margaret Atwood and based on her witty and troubling novella of the same name, retells the myth of Odysseus–only from the perspective of the Ancient Greek hero's overlooked wife, Queen Penelope. I went to the opening night of Nightwood Theatre's production of The Penelopiad in January. We have a rich discussion about what it must have been like for Penelope to have Odysseus telling her to remarry, the suitors heavying her, and her own wishes at odds with both of them for different reasons .
